Welcome flyfishers, We have been fishing the Blackwater River for over 35 years and we are pretty convinced that there is no flyfishing experience quite like it ......anywhere. During this time, we have operated premium float trips for groups of up to 12 flyfishers from around the world. The prolific population of wild, native rainbow trout has remained very consistent through these years. As the only outfitter on the Blackwater River, we are able to offer our parties a very high degree of privacy, rarely seeing another angler along the river. In the off-season, we are very active working to conserve the Blackwater, its' tributaries and area lakes so that this productive native rainbow habitat and the unique flyfishing opportunities it presents are protected. This effort has aided in the establishment of a new provincial park along the upper river and 'Heritage River' designation for the entire Blackwater River. We have also convinced the Fisheries Branch to regulate this river as 'artificial fly only' water and the federal government to implement a power boat restriction on the entire river beginning this year. The Blackwater should remain as pristine as ever, with mile after mile of rainbow filled river, and no other anglers in sight. The Blackwater (or West Road as it is called on most maps) drains a vast hinterland in the northern Cariboo/Chilcotin region of British Columbia. Sharing headwaters with the world's most famous summer steelhead stream, the Dean River, the Blackwater flows east through the Fraser Plateau collecting runoff from expansive grasslands, muskeg swamps, scattered pine and aspen forests and countless trout filled lakes. The area is at the northern end of the interior dry belt, in the lee of the coastal mountains, which disperse Pacific weather systems, moderate weather conditions, create spectacular cloud formations and breathtaking sunsets. The amount of water surface in the upper watershed collects a great deal of solar heat on the long summer days giving the river a very warm temperature (up to 20C/70F) which promotes the rich insect life which in turn supports the ample rainbow trout population. 'Wet" wading conditions are the rule through mid August and waders are often donned only for passing weather systems. The Blackwater River is home to an abundant population of rainbow trout averaging 14 inches, with the largest just over 20 inches. They attack dry flies readily and anglers are rarely tempted to fish by any other method. At season opening, June 15, the stoneflies and caddis flies are thick. The caddis continue throughout the summer. The first couple of weeks can involve some amazing stonefly activity and the long, early summer days provide ample opportunity to release more native rainbow trout than you ever imagined. Rounding each bend, another stretch of trout domain unfolds which has likely not seen an angler since our visit the previous week. Those occasions when another flyfisher is encountered are so rare that they are curiously pleasant. Contact us now to visit the wild, native Blackwater River rainbows in 2007!
